Women’s Empowerment and the Transformation of Economic Structures

To mark the occasion of International Women’s Day - 8 March 2018, the Baha’i Office of Public Affairs of Baha'i community of India hosted a roundtable meeting on the theme ‘Women’s Empowerment and the Transformation of Economic Structures on 9 March 2018 at the Information Centre Seminar hall of the Baha’i House of Worship, New Delhi, India.

Thirty delegates from across various organizations all with the common goal of working towards Women Empowerment attended.

Discussing some of the points prepared in a concept note developed for this theme, Ms. Nilakshi Rajkhowa, director – Baha’i Office of Public Affairs said that the objective of the day was to identify the challenges hampering the advancement of women’s empowerment and to seek possible solutions to overcome them.

Dr. Suraiya Tabassum(one of the speakers), Associate Professor, Sarojini Naidu Centre Women’s studies, who
advocates for Muslim Women’s rights, shared some of the successes that have worked in Iceland a country who has been a top performer when it comes to gender issues for the past
nine years.

Dr. Asha Chandra(another speaker), President , All India Women Education Fund Association who expressed her pleasure at the presence of men at the roundtable discussion and was heartened to know that men too have a keen interest in contributing towards the empowerment of women.

Third speaker , Ms.Martha Moghbelpour, National Coordinator, Social Action Desk of the National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha’is of India. She shared that challenges need to be addressed in light of “equality being a fundamental truth” with this in mind we need to work on the stumbling blocks so that the fundamental truth is manifested as a reality on the ground.
